I was a swing for the first time in 2016 with no clue how to do the job.
I dove in head first thinking if I could break everything down into manageable, color-coded pieces, I’d be successful. But the first time I was swung in, I discovered I was totally wrong!
My notes weren’t functional for what I was actually doing.
They were stunning, don’t get me wrong, but they were ill-suited to the task at hand. I had to start over from scratch. But the second time around, it was much easier. Things made more sense and I knew how to leverage my strengths as a performer to save myself time (which was great since we were basically in tech by then).
Understanding what it really meant to be a swing
and what I would actually need when I swung in led me to create a streamlined, effective, and repeatable system that I’ve sworn by for years.
Now, I’m helping young actors beat the learning curve
by getting an opportunity to understand what being a swing looks like so that they can create their own systems - before their reputations are on the line.
